What makes a good text to a buyer?

The lot that answers first, with the car and the price, gets the conversation. Many don't: 62.8% of shoppers who sent a dealer an inquiry and came back to the site still hadn't heard from a salesperson 24 hours later.

Four rules for every text
  1. 1Answer in minutes, not hours. The first lot to reply usually gets the visit.
  2. 2One question per text.Finance or cash? A trade-in? When can you come? One at a time gets answers.
  3. 3Real details beat friendly filler. The car, the price, the link, a time. Skip “Thanks for your interest!”
  4. 4Answer in their language. If they write in Spanish or Portuguese, reply in it. Every template below has all three.

What should I text a car buyer first?

Confirm the car is still there, give the price and the listing link, and ask one question, like finance or cash. Template 1 has it in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

How do I reply to “Is this still available?” on Facebook Marketplace?

Say yes, add one real detail like the miles and the price, and ask when they'd like to come see it. Template 2 has the wording.

Do I have to use the exact words?

No. They're starting points. Keep the shape: one real detail, one question, and a real time when you offer a visit.

How do you answer a new lead?

Fast, with the car and the price. Six templates for the first reply.

Show the templates in

1Replying to a CarGurus, Cars.com or Autotrader lead

The first text, as soon as the lead comes in. Confirm the car, give the price and the link, then ask one question.

Buyer

(A new lead from CarGurus)

You

Hi [Name], this is [Dealership]. The [Car] is still here, listed at [Price]: [Link]. Are you looking to finance or pay cash?

2“Is this still available?” from Facebook Marketplace

The most common first message there is. Answer it, add one detail, and move to a visit.

Buyer

“Is this still available?”

You

Yes, it's still available! It has [Miles] miles and it's [Price]. When would you like to come see it?

3A lead that came in overnight

First thing in the morning. Thank them, confirm the car, and ask about today.

Buyer

(A lead that came in at 11:48 PM)

You

Good morning [Name], thanks for asking about the [Car] last night. It's still here at [Price]. Would you like to come see it today?

4Texting back after a missed call

A text you start, so send it during the day. Short, and about the car.

Buyer

(A missed call from a new number)

You

Hi, this is [Dealership]. Sorry we missed your call! Are you asking about a car on our lot?

5They ask for more photos

Send the listing link, not twenty attachments, and ask what they want to see.

Buyer

“Can you send more pics?”

You

Here are all the photos of the [Car]: [Link]. Anything you'd like a closer look at?

6The car already sold

Say so plainly, once, and offer the closest car you really have.

Buyer

“Is it still there?”

You

Sorry [Name], the [Car] just sold. We have a [Other car] at [Price]: [Link]. Would you like to see it?

What do you say about price, credit and trade-ins?

Repeat their numbers and leave exact figures to your team. Three templates.

7They ask for your best or out-the-door price

Repeat their number back so they know you heard it, leave the exact figures to the person who can stand behind them, and keep the conversation going.

Buyer

“I want to be 22k out the door”

You

Got it, [Their price] out the door. Our team will go over the exact numbers with you. Do you have a trade-in?

8They ask about financing or credit

Send your credit application link and ask about the down payment. Don't promise approval.

Buyer

“Can I finance? My credit isn't great”

You

We help with financing. You can start the application here: [Credit app link]. How much are you thinking of putting down?

9They mention a trade-in

Get what your team needs to look at it, in one ask.

Buyer

“Do you take trade-ins?”

You

We take trade-ins. What's the year, make and model, and about how many miles?

How do you book the visit?

Offer two real times, then confirm. Four templates.

10Offering a time to come in

Two real times from your lot hours beat “when works for you?”

Buyer

“When can I come see it?”

You

We're open [Day] from [Hours]. I have [Time 1] or [Time 2], which works better?

11Confirming the visit

Day, time, address, and the car. Then tell them how to change it.

Buyer

“Saturday at 11 works”

You

You're set for [Day] at [Time] at [Address]. The [Car] will be ready for you. Reply here if anything changes.

12The reminder the day before

A text you start, so send it during the day (see the rules below).

Buyer

(The day before their visit)

You

Hi [Name], a reminder from [Dealership]: you're coming to see the [Car] tomorrow at [Time], [Address]. Reply here if anything changes.

13They need a different time

Don't make them call. Offer two new times and move it.

Buyer

“Can I come Tuesday instead?”

You

No problem, let's move it. I have [Time 1] or [Time 2] on [Day], which works better?

How do you follow up without pushing?

One light check-in and an easy next step. Three templates.

Show the templates in

14They went quiet

A day or two later, one light check-in. Give them an easy next step.

Buyer

(No reply for two days)

You

Hi [Name], it's [Dealership]. Still thinking about the [Car]? I can send more photos or set up a time to see it.

15They didn't show up

No guilt. Make it easy to pick a new time.

Buyer

(They didn't come in)

You

Hi [Name], we missed you today. Want to pick another time to see the [Car]?

16After the sale

A day or two after delivery. One thank-you, one link.

Buyer

(Two days after delivery)

You

Congrats on your [Car], [Name]! If we took good care of you, a quick review would mean a lot: [Review link]

What are the texting rules?

Texts you start follow stricter rules. Here's what to follow.

  • Replying is different from starting. When a buyer texts you, answering right away is part of a conversation they started.
  • Texts you start (a first text to a new lead, follow-ups, reminders, a missed-call text) go out between 9 AM and 8 PM in the buyer's time zone. Some states are stricter: Florida, for one, limits Sundays.
  • Don't text payment, rate or approval numbers you can't stand behind. Let the person who can quote them do it.
  • Texting from a business number needs carrier registration (called 10DLC) before messages go out reliably.

General guidance, not legal advice. Check your state's rules.

STOP

  • Stop the moment they say STOP, and confirm it once:
Buyer

“STOP”

You

You won't get any more texts from [Dealership]. Reply START to get them again.

Can I text a car lead at night?

Replying to a buyer who just texted you is part of a conversation they started. Texts you start, like a first text to a new lead or a follow-up, should go out between 9 AM and 8 PM in the buyer's time zone. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Or let the owl send them for you.

LotOwl answers every lead in about a minute, 24/7, in English, Spanish or Portuguese, books the visit and tells your team. $699 a month, no setup fee.
